Background and Development Factors

Naledi Community Radio as an entity was formed in June 1997, it is an initiative by the local community volunteers who felt that local people wanted to hear programming that would help them develop self-empowerment skills, fund jobs, improve their knowledge, inform them about local government administration and services e.g. basic services, housing, infrastructure etc, and to entertain them with local music. In 1999 May, after obtaining a Four Years Community Broadcasting License from ICASA the then IBA, the Department of Communication provided and commissioned the installation of equipment to the value of R472 702. The Minister of Communications Dr. Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, in the presence of Premier of the Free State Me Winkie Direko, officially opened this project on the 28th January 2000 at Botshabelo.
